European Junior Championships - Double silver for Liam

Metro's Liam Selby and Sophie Pyatt both turned in fantastic performances in this week's European Junior Swimming Championships in Helsinki.

Liam picked up two silver medals in swimming the 3rd leg in both the 4x100m freestyle relay and the 4x200m freestyle relay.  The GB team were beaten by France on both occasions despite improving on their times in the heats considerably.

Liam, who turned 18 at the start of this month, only qualified for his first national final in 2009 and has made tremendous progress over the last three years.  Metro head coach Richard Blackshaw commented on how impressed he was with the composure shown by Liam in what was the most intense pressure of his career to date.

Liam is in good company; previous European Junior Medallists from Stockport Metro include James Hickman (five times World Short Course Champion), James Goddard (Commonwealth Champion), Graeme Smith (Olympic Bronze medalist) and Keri-Anne Payne (Olympic Silver medalist).

Sophie qualified as one of the youngest swimmers and won't be 15 until later this year.  Despite this Sophie made the semi-finals of the 200m breaststroke and although not progressing beyond the heats in the 400 IM was the 6th fastest in her year group overall.

The official website for the championships now has photos available to view here.  Liam can be seen diving in on Row 5 Photo 3 and receiving his medal on Row 5 Photo 6.
